Copperopolis takes its name from copper ore found in the hills of Calaveras County, a foothill district better known for its gold rush diggings, so this view is a reminder that the county's mining economy was not limited to gold. The Library holds only one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the Gems of California scenery series as number 955 and dated 1866 in the record. Stereographs like this were meant to be seen through a double-lens viewer, which fused the two images into a single scene with depth that a flat print could not give. The catalog data comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so details of the scene should be read with that in mind.
