Mokelumne Hill sat in Calaveras County, in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, and this stereograph shows the town as seen from the surrounding slope. The Library of Congress holds only one half of the original pair, which was issued as number 868 in a series titled "Gems of California Scenery" and published around 1866. Such views were sold to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. Mokelumne Hill grew up during the Gold Rush of the early 1850s, so the picture records a mining town that was already settling into a more permanent life by the time it was made.
