Heaps of washed gravel and cobble from the Columbia claim in Tuolumne County are the focus of this view, a scene that shows how placer mining reshaped the Sierra Nevada foothills. Columbia boomed after gold was found there in 1850, and its diggings became one of the best-known camps of the Mother Lode. Published around 1866 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, the print is one half of a stereoscopic pair, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The Library holds only this half, but it still records a landscape that miners had turned inside out.
