Brown's Flat, in Tuolumne County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is the setting for this view of pumping machinery at work in a placer mining operation. Placer miners worked gold-bearing gravel in streambeds and flats, and pumps were needed to move water for washing the gravel and to keep diggings from flooding. The print is one half of a stereograph pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, which sold stereo views of the state to a national audience in the 1860s. Only the left half survives in this collection, so the paired view is not available here. The 1866 publication date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
