Few things in the gallery capture the Gold Rush landscape as directly as this view of placer mines on Knapp's Ranch near Columbia in Tuolumne County. Columbia was one of the busiest mining towns of the early 1850s, and placer operations like these, which washed gold out of gravel with water and sluices, reshaped hillsides across the region. The image survives as one half of a stereograph, a format that was hugely popular in the 1860s, when viewers used paired pictures and a hand viewer to see the scene in depth. This example comes from the Gems of California series, catalogued as number 1022, and the record notes that the caption information is unverified, so the date and details are best read with that caveat in mind.
