Hoofland's celebrated German tonic water, according to this 1860s woodcut, cures dyspepsia, liver complaint, and debility, and its caption urges readers to "Buy it! Try it!" The printer's imprint, Stein & Jones of 321 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, places the job in a steam-powered shop that produced colorful advertising for patent medicines sold through druggists, storekeepers, and hotels. Its subject tags also include marching percussion, which suggests the scene shows a drummer or parade.
