Dr. Zane's antidote promises a sure cure for drunkenness, and its title reads like a shopkeeper's sign set down in print. Dated to about 1864, it belongs to the mid-nineteenth-century trade in patent remedies and quack cures, when medicine sellers and temperance reformers both claimed to offer relief from the bottle. The record associates the name Duval with the card, though that attribution is unverified. The blunt, peddler-style wording is worth noticing for what it shows about how sellers pitched hope to drinkers and their families during the Civil War years.
