A cure for Republican lockjaw" turns a medical joke into political commentary: a party that will not open its mouth, aimed here at Republicans in Congress. The print appeared in the winter of 1860-61, when seven Southern states had already left the Union and lawmakers in Washington were debating compromise proposals on slavery's future, and critics charged the Republicans with refusing to bargain. It was published in New York by Benjamin Day, and the design is signed by Benjamin H. Day Jr., and it shows the sharp partisan cartooning of the period, when such prints spoke to readers who already held strong views on the sectional crisis.
