Regnier de Graaf, the Dutch physician shown here, is remembered chiefly for his work on the reproductive organs. In 1672 he described the small fluid-filled structures in the ovary that now bear his name, Graafian follicles, a finding that helped shape later understanding of human reproduction. He also studied the digestive secretions of the pancreas and worked on improving the syringe, which he used in his experiments. He died young, at 32, in 1673, so his brief career is notable for how much it influenced anatomy and physiology.
