Titled simply *2 a.m.*, this drypoint shows a city street in the small hours, the kind of nocturnal scene Martin Lewis returned to throughout his career. Working largely in New York, Lewis found quiet drama in deserted pavements, lamplight, and wet stone, and drypoint, which cuts lines directly into a copper plate, suited his deep blacks and soft halos of light. The catalog tags also mention street cleaning and women, suggesting that people at work and passersby, not just buildings, drew his eye. Made in 1942, the print shows that his urban night views continued well into the wartime years.
