A pencil sketch of a drummer boy resting, dated September 30, 1863, and placed at Culpeper, Virginia, this drawing shows a young musician off duty rather than in the field action found in many wartime images. Culpeper lay in the path of repeated troop movements that year, and the Union army camped and marched through the surrounding countryside through the autumn. Drummers, often boys in their early teens, set the rhythm for camp life, signaling the day's routines and marching orders. The drawing bears the initials "EF," and it came to the Library of Congress as a 1919 gift from J. P. Morgan, as part of its Civil War drawing collection.
