Three figures stand together in this 1543 engraving: an ensign bearing a flag, a drummer, and a piper, the musicians and standard-bearer who led a company of foot soldiers. The date places the work in the mid-sixteenth century, when German mercenary infantry, known as Landsknechts, were widely hired across Europe and drums and fifes carried orders across the battlefield. Prints of this kind often recorded soldiers' costumes and instruments for viewers who would never see such companies in person, so the dress and equipment are worth a close look.
