The subject is Mordecai's triumph from the Book of Esther, in which the courtier Haman is forced to lead Mordecai through the city in royal honor, a sharp reversal of fortune. This 1515 engraving by Lucas van Leyden, the Leiden-born printmaker who began working as a youth, is signed with his initial and dated on the plate. The plate mark has been trimmed away, so the sheet has no margin, and a stamp from the Hubbard Collection records its earlier ownership. Lucas's precise, controlled line made his prints widely collected and copied across Europe in the early 1500s.
