Here the rake's progress ends somewhere unexpected: the dissolute young man of the title finds his calling not in ruin but in the wine glass, becoming a wine writer with a first book to his name. The drawing borrows its premise from William Hogarth's eighteenth-century series of prints, in which a wastrel's excess leads to a grim end. This 1973 version turns that moral around, using party scenes and bottles where Hogarth used gaming tables and gin shops. Its May 1973 publication date places it in a decade when eating and drinking were becoming popular subjects of humor and commentary.
