Christ, crowned with thorns and shown to the crowd, is the moment Pilate presents as "Ecce Homo," Latin for "Behold the man." Albrecht Dürer engraved this plate in 1512, the same year he issued his engraved Small Passion, a sequence of scenes from Christ's final days that showed how fully he had mastered the burin. He signed the plate with his monogram and date, a mark that claimed the work as his own. The impression later passed through several private collections before entering the Library of Congress as part of the Hubbard Collection.
