The letter L appears reversed in this 1524 engraving, a sign that the design was cut into the copper plate backward and reads correctly only in the printed impression. Measuring about 4.5 by 3 inches, the sheet belongs to a wide body of engravings made between 1520 and 1530, when small single prints circulated widely among collectors and households. Musicians were a popular subject in these years, and prints like this one brought images of instruments and song into homes where live performances were rare.
