This hand-colored lithograph singles out John Ennis, a pedestrian, or professional long-distance walker, whose name was well known to sporting audiences in the late 1870s. Walking feats of that era, often staged as multi-day matches with large wagers, drew enormous crowds and newspaper coverage, and Currier & Ives produced portraits of popular athletes for a public eager to follow them. The print was issued by Currier & Ives in New York around 1879, and it is cataloged in the firm's standard raisonné, which makes it a useful record of how the company marketed sporting celebrities.
