The lithograph is an advertisement for E.I. Horsman, a New York toy and game maker, and it shows the lawn tennis craze that swept American backyards in the early 1880s. Charles Hart, the lithographer named on the print, worked in New York and produced many colorful commercial images of the period. Lawn tennis had reached the United States only a few years earlier, and manufacturers like Horsman sold equipment and games to families eager to play the new sport at home. Notice how the print combines leisure, fashion, and a sales pitch, a common approach for advertising in the 1880s.
