John L. Sullivan, the Boston-born heavyweight, is the figure at the center of this Currier & Ives lithograph, drawn by J. Cameron and published in New York around 1883. By then Sullivan had built a reputation as the most famous bare-knuckle and then gloved fighter in America, and prints like this one helped turn prizefighting into a subject for the general public. The lithograph's title calls him champion of the world, a claim that reflected his dominance of the heavyweight division in the early 1880s. Note how the firm's commercial lithography, usually reserved for landscapes and genre scenes, was applied here to a sporting hero.
