This print shows the September 1923 heavyweight bout at the Polo Grounds in New York, where Jack Dempsey fought the Argentine challenger Luis Firpo. The fight became famous when Firpo knocked Dempsey through the ropes and onto the ringside press tables in the first round, and Dempsey climbed back in to win by knockout in the second. George Bellows, known for his urban scenes and boxing paintings, turned the moment into a lithograph printed by Bolton Brown, the lithographer who worked with Bellows on many of his stone prints. The sheet is signed in pencil by the artist, and the crowded, churning composition captures the chaos of the event.
