Jack Dempsey, the former heavyweight champion, is shown throwing a punch at Tony Fuente during a benefit exhibition in Santa Monica, California, with proceeds going to the Mississippi Flood Fund. The 1927 Mississippi River flood was one of the most destructive disasters in American history, displacing hundreds of thousands of people across several states, and charity bouts like this one used the public appeal of well-known athletes to raise money. Dempsey had lost his title to Gene Tunney in 1926, but he remained one of the most recognizable names in sports, which gave the event a draw that an ordinary match would not have had.
