The title "Jack Baker" comes from unverified notes made by the National Photo Company, but the catalog links the picture to the family of Newton Diehl Baker, who served as Secretary of War under Woodrow Wilson from 1916 to 1921. This glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1920, when the Washington, D.C.-based National Photo Company recorded officials, families and everyday scenes in large numbers. The subject terms identify the boys pictured as tennis players, a pastime popular with young people of the era. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings, which affects how much fine detail is visible.
