Betty Baker, a sixteen-year-old tennis player, is the sitter here, and the record places her as a first-round winner in the women's national indoor singles championship in New York on March 10, 1919. That was a notable result for a teenager in a sport still dominated by adults, and the glass negative captures her from the National Photo Company's studio work in Washington, D.C., during the years just after the First World War. Women's tennis was growing quickly then, with more girls and young women taking up the game in public courts and private clubs. The glass plate itself shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coatings, a reminder of how these early portraits were made.
