This 1939 silkscreen poster announces a field day for a WPA recreation project in Illinois's District No. 2, and its subjects include tennis players, which sets it apart from other images on this board. The Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration that same year, ran recreation programs that built and staffed playgrounds, courts, and athletic fields during the Depression, giving unemployed workers jobs and communities free places to play. Posters like this one were produced under the federal art projects, which used silkscreen to advertise local events in bold, flat color. The record also names the Federal theater Project as a sponsor, a reminder that the New Deal agencies often shared promotional work.
