Children shaping sand figures in an open-air play area anchor this 1936 silkscreen poster, which advertised a Works Progress Administration recreation program in the "Dist. no. 2" district. Recreation programs like this one gave Depression-era communities supervised play space and organized activities for young people, and the Federal Art Project turned out posters such as this to publicize them. The print's color is built up by layered silkscreen stencils, a method the project's artists used because it was inexpensive and could be reproduced in quantity. A date stamp on the reverse, April 3, 1939, shows the poster was still being handled years after it was first made.
