A silkscreen poster from 1939 that advertises a doll and buggy parade put on by the WPA recreation project in District No. 2 in Illinois, with children as both the marchers and the audience. The Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939, ran community recreation programs during the Depression, and local events like this one gave kids a chance to play together when money was scarce. Federal Art Project artists designed many posters like this to promote such activities, and this one shows how the agency used bright color and simple graphics to reach families in small towns and city neighborhoods.
