Unlike the many WPA posters that promote theater, art, or music, this one advertises a hiking outing from the recreation program in Illinois, with its district number printed in the title. Recreation projects of the Works Progress Administration in the mid-1930s offered low-cost sports, games, and outdoor activities to communities hit hard by the Depression. The poster is a silkscreen print, a method the WPA's poster workshops used because it was cheap to reproduce in quantity and bold in color. Its record also links it to the Federal theater Project, a reminder that the WPA's poster shops produced material for several of its divisions.
