Illinois hiking gets the spotlight in this 1939 silkscreen poster, which was made for a WPA recreation project in the state's District No. 2 and signed with the name Beard. The Works Progress Administration, later renamed the Work Projects Administration, employed artists during the Depression, and its poster division produced silkscreen prints like this one to promote free public classes, sports, and outdoor activities. Silkscreen suited the work because it allowed bold, flat areas of color that could be printed cheaply in quantity. The poster reflects a period when public recreation programs sought to keep residents active and connected to the outdoors.
