Max Baer and Primo Carnera face off in this 1934 lithograph by Robert Riggs, a pairing that drew wide attention because of the contrast between the two fighters. Carnera, an Italian giant who had risen quickly through the heavyweight ranks, was known for his enormous size, while Baer was a hard-hitting, theatrical American champion. Their New York bout in June 1934 ended with Baer winning by knockout, and Riggs, who made a number of boxing lithographs during the 1930s, captured the tension of the ring in the stone-printed image.
