Unlike the other locomotion studies on this board, this print is a color lithograph of a zoopraxiscope disc, a device Eadweard Muybridge used to project sequences of motion as moving images. Its subject is boxing, a sport Muybridge photographed in detail during his animal and human locomotion work at the University of Pennsylvania in the mid-1880s. The disc design turns those separate photographic poses into a loop, so the viewer sees a fighter's movements as one continuous action. The print also reflects the late 1890s interest in early moving pictures, when audiences were just learning to read motion on a screen.
