On the Ropes" uses the boxing term for a fighter pinned against the ring's edge and close to defeat, and Robert Riggs's lithograph makes that moment its center. Dated around 1932 or 1933, it was made during the Depression, when American artists often turned to prizefighting for its raw energy and its crowds. Riggs signed the print both in pencil and on the stone, which suggests the image was drawn directly on the lithographic stone, a detail worth noticing in a work of this period.
