Cornell's rowing crew is the focus of this color poster, which shows the university's sporting identity at a moment when intercollegiate crew races drew large crowds and considerable newspaper attention. Printed by the Deutz Litho Co. of New York around 1902, it bears the name John E. Sheridan and a copyright credited to the art department of Barron G. Collier. Lithographed posters of this kind were a common way for firms and organizations to reach urban audiences, and the period's commercial art often mixed sport, optimism, and bold graphic design. Looking closely at the color work and composition shows how much the printers relied on flat, vivid areas of ink.
