Stanford University football players take center stage in this 1903 poster, drawn for a Thanksgiving issue of Sunset Magazine. The Passenger Department of the Southern Pacific railroad issued it to promote travel across California, and the Sunset Press printed it. Football was still a rough, young sport in 1903, and Stanford was one of the West Coast programs drawing attention, so the image links the railroad's promotion of the state to the holiday season and its college athletics. The record credits the illustration to an artist named Sheridan.
