Currier & Ives issued this lithograph of anglers at work around 1879, when the firm was producing a steady stream of sporting and outdoor scenes for a middle-class market eager for images of leisure in the countryside. Fly fishing, a method of casting an artificial lure on a light line, had grown popular in the American northeast and its streams by the late 1870s, and the print turns that pastime into a quiet, orderly scene of rural recreation. The firm's prints of this period were typically hand-colored or printed in color from stone and sold cheaply through shops and catalogs, which helped spread such genre pictures into ordinary homes. Its entry in the Gale Research catalog raisonné, no. 2249, makes it a useful reference point for studying the firm's output.
