Currier & Ives produced this lithograph around 1872 as part of their popular winter sporting scenes, which showed ice-covered ponds and rivers as places of leisure for all classes. The title points to pickerel fishing, a method of angling through a hole cut in the ice, where anglers sat patiently over small openings waiting for the pike-family fish to bite. Prints like this one helped define the American image of winter as a season of outdoor recreation rather than hardship. Its catalog entry in the 1983 Currier & Ives raisonné shows how carefully scholars have since documented the firm's large output of such scenes.
