Caught on the fly" names a specific angling method: a fish taken on an artificial lure dressed to imitate an insect, a skill that American anglers prized and wrote about extensively by the 1870s. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued inexpensive color lithographs for a wide public, produced many sporting scenes like this one, and the company's 1879 date places it in the decade when such prints were especially popular in middle-class parlors. The record places it in the firm's catalog of work, so it can be compared with the company's other fish and sport subjects.
