Dated 11 December 1620 in its title, this hand-colored Currier lithograph depicts the Pilgrims' arrival at Plymouth, an event that 19th-century Americans came to treat as a founding moment. The Mayflower had reached the Massachusetts coast in late 1620 with about 102 passengers, and the settlers' landing at Plymouth is the scene the print commemorates. Its subject headings also name Native people, a reminder that the encounter was part of the story the print invited viewers to picture. Published in New York by Nathaniel Currier, the sheet is one of many colonial scenes the firm sold to a broad middle-class market.
