A watercolor of a Jamaican sugar works, dated between 1808 and 1816, records an estate complex at a time when the island was one of Britain's most valuable colonies. Sugar was made by crushing cane at the mill and boiling its juice in copper kettles, work that relied entirely on enslaved labor. Parliament banned the British slave trade in 1807, with the ban taking effect in 1808, but enslaved people already on the island remained in bondage. Images like this one show the buildings and machinery of the plantation economy, yet they say little about the people who worked there.
