Few pictures from the Northwest boundary survey show a fort on the Columbia River, so this view of the U.S. military post at the lower Cascades stands apart from the commission's other scenes. The rapids there forced travelers and freight to portage around the falls, which made the site strategically important. The post was part of the army's effort to hold the river route in the Pacific Northwest during the years after the 1846 Oregon Treaty settled the boundary with Britain. The photograph comes from an album assembled around the British Northwest Boundary Commission, whose surveyors were mapping the line between the two countries at the same time.
