The sitter is Desiderius Erasmus, the scholar born in Rotterdam, though the title misspells the city as "Rotterdm." Erasmus, who died in 1536, was among the most influential humanists of the Renaissance, known for his Latin writings and his 1516 edition of the Greek New Testament. This portrait was engraved by Wallerant Vaillant, a Netherlandish printmaker, sometime between 1650 and 1677, when the mezzotint process, which builds tone by scraping a roughened copper plate, was still relatively new and valued for its soft gradations.
