The sitter here is not a living figure but the subject of a nickname: "L'Aiglon," or "the eaglet," the name given to François-Charles-Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's son, who was called the Duke of Reichstadt in Vienna after his father's fall. This carte de visite, sold by the Paris studio of H. Tournier from Rue de Seine, was issued between 1850 and 1880 and appears in an album of portraits connected to the reign of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The record suggests it may reproduce a painting rather than a live sitting, a common practice in that period, when studios copied fashionable images of famous people for a buying public eager for them. The young duke, who lived most of his short life under Habsburg watch and died of tuberculosis at 21, made a poignant subject for such portraits.
