The road that linked Silverton and Ouray wound through the high San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, a route that carried ore, supplies, and passengers between two busy mining towns. This stereograph shows a horse-drawn carriage on that toll road, with the steep mountain walls rising behind it. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced and sold millions of stereo cards like this one around 1897, and viewers used a stereoscope to see the scene in depth. Travelers paid tolls to use roads like this one, so the carriage and the road themselves record how people moved through Colorado's mining country at the close of the nineteenth century.
