Pony Mountain in Virginia is the setting for this small pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper, dated September 1863. The sheet measures just 9.1 by 10.2 centimeters, so the artist worked at a modest scale, sketching the signal station and its surroundings in quick, economical lines. Signal stations like this one, set on high ground, were part of the Union Army Signal Corps network, which relayed messages across long distances by flag and lamp during the Civil War. The Signal Corps depended on such hilltop posts to keep armies informed of enemy movements, which made these lookouts strategically important.
