Small enough to hold in one hand, this pencil sketch on green paper is titled *Brandy Station* and dated to about June 9, 1863, the day of the battle fought near Culpeper, Virginia. It is catalogued among the drawings of Alfred R. Waud, the British-born illustrator who sent sketches from the front to *Harper's Weekly*, and its subject is listed as military headquarters. The engagement pitted Union cavalry under Alfred Pleasonton against Confederate horsemen led by J.E.B. Stuart, and it remains the largest cavalry battle fought in North America. Field sketches like this one were engraved for readers who had no other view of the fighting.
