Winter quarters at Brandy Station, Virginia, make this view of camp architecture from January 1864 distinctive. The site had seen one of the largest cavalry battles of the war in June 1863, and by winter the Army of the Potomac had settled there in rows of log huts, chimneys and plank doors built for shelter against the cold. Alexander Gardner published the view in his Photographic Sketchbook of the War, working from a negative made by T.H. O'Sullivan, and it documents how soldiers turned open fields into lived-in camps.
