Winter quarters of the 50th New York Engineers at Rappahannock Station, photographed in March 1864, set this view apart from the many camp scenes of the Army of the Potomac. The regiment's men built and repaired the pontoon bridges that let the army cross rivers such as the Rappahannock, which is why the bridge subject tracing on the caption card fits their work. The Brady-Handy studio, run by Mathew Brady and Levin Handy in Washington, documented the Union army throughout the war, though the details here come from a caption card that has not been independently verified.
