The picture shows the Imperial Sishane Police Station in Beyoğlu, the district on the European side of Istanbul that held many of the city's foreign consulates, shops, and embassies. It is one of a series of photographs of police stations and other public buildings in an album from the collection of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909. The album's captions appear in both Ottoman Turkish and French, which reflects how the Ottoman state presented its public works to a European audience during this period.
