Few buildings in the National Photo Company's Washington views stand out as clearly as the Southern Building, a commercial office block near the corner of 15th and H Streets NW, a short walk from the White House. The firm recorded the city's streets, public buildings and business blocks in the early twentieth century, and this negative dates from roughly 1910 to 1926, a period when Washington was expanding as a center of government and commerce. The glass plate has aged, and its streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, so the image also shows the physical wear of the medium.
