Southern Apartments, at 123 G Street Southwest, stood on a site that had once held Civil War barracks, a reminder of how quickly Washington filled with soldiers during the war and how its temporary structures were later put to other uses. Many of the wartime camps and buildings were reused or replaced as the city grew. The National Photo Company made this glass negative in the years around 1918 to 1928, when it documented Washington street by street. Look closely at the glass, where streaks and blemishes from the aging coating are part of the negative's character.
