A monument firm, J.E. Smith Stones Co., is the subject of this view at Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, where gravestones and memorials were made and sold for families. Oak Hill was established in the 1840s as one of Washington's garden cemeteries, laid out with winding paths and landscaped plots meant for quiet reflection. The National Photo Company, which recorded the city's streets, businesses and institutions in the years around 1918 to 1928, made the negative. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
